Cells of Connective Tissue

Connective tissue cells include many types with different functions. Vary with tissue and its physiological state.

  • 1) Some originate locally and remain in the connective tissue (Resident/fixed cells).
  • 2) others originate elsewhere and remain only temporarily in connective tissue (transient/free cells).

Resident Cells

  • Fibroblasts (Fibrocyte)
  • Pericyte
  • Mesenchymal cells
  • Adipocytes
  • Mast cells
  • Macrophages (histiocytes)

Transient Cells

  • Plasma cells
  • Lymphocytes
  • Leukocytes
  • Macrophages
  • Melanocytes
