CEREBRUM: Composed of paired cerebral hemisphere. Characteristic neuron has a pyramid shaped cell body & their apex is directed towards the outer surface.

Cortex is divided into

1. Molecular (plexiform) layer: consist of neuropils (refers to axons, telodendria, dendrites & glial processes forming background matrix for cell bodies)
2. External granular layer: predominantly small neurons
3. External pyramidal layer: medium & large pyramidal neurons
4. Internal granular layer: small satellite neurons
5. Internal pyramidal layer: medium to very large pyramidal neurons
6. Fusiform (multiform) layer: many spindle-shaped neurons

•Deep to the cortex is cerebral white matter composed of nerve fibers.
